Me Gabriel Babineau has a wealth of experience in criminal and penal law and appeals in criminal and penal matters. He also serves as an assessor on the Human Rights Tribunal.
Me Babineau began his career as a law clerk for Judge François Doyon of the Court of Appeal of Quebec. He has appeared before several different courts, including the Court of Appeal of Quebec and the Supreme Court of Canada. Professional associations frequently call upon him to act as an advocate before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Court of Appeal of Quebec. In 2018, he was co-recipient of the Robert Sachitelle award presented by the Association des avocats de la défense de Montréal-Laval-Longueuil for his outstanding performance in a case. Since 2018, Me Babineau has been a lecturer in the master’s program in criminal and penal law practice at the Université de Sherbrooke, where he teaches courses on appeals and Charter rights in criminal and penal law.
Me Babineau holds a Bachelor of Arts (Major in Philosophy) from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Laws from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He also earned a Master of Laws from the Université de Laval. His master’s thesis examined the impact of mass arrests on the right of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. His research has been cited by the Court of Appeal of Quebec and the Superior Court of Quebec in decisions on the right to protest.
Owing to his expertise in human rights, he was appointed as an assessor to the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal in 2023. Me. Babineau also sits on the Board of Directors of the Quebec Innocence Project. Me Babineau is driven in his law practice by the firm belief that every person has the right to a full and complete defence, and he represents his clients with dedication and commitment. Me Babineau is fully bilingual and works with his clients in English and French.
